UFC Fight Night 42 Recap – Henderson earns a wins, Sanchez steals one

June 9, 2014

It was a great night of fights in Albuquerque New Mexico with TKOs and Submissions and a split decision victory.

Ben Henderson Vs. Rustam Khabilov
Benson Henderson fired out a warning shot, if anyone wants a shot at the UFC lightweight title, they’re going to have to go through him. Henderson avoided Rustam Khabilov’s grappling and peppered the Russian with strikes until he finally landed a combination that dropped his opponent. Henderson hit a right uppercut, left straight combination that allowed him to take Khabilov’s back and sink in the rear naked choke for a 4th round victory.

Diego Sanchez Vs. Ross Pearson
Diego Sanchez got a victory over Ross Pearson but to everyone watching the fight (except for the highly partisan Albuquerque crowd) it was another case of robbery by the UFC judges. Pearson stayed active the entire fight, pressing forward and landing several combinations even dropping Sanchez at one point. It was the only knockdown of the fight. The statistics showed Pearson won the fight, Sanchez’s face showed that Pearson won the fight but two of the three judges didn’t see it that way. There was even a 30-27 Sanchez when by most accounts it was 30-27 Pearson perhaps 29-28 Pearson but the horrible UFC judging continues.
Diego Sanchez def. Ross Pearson via split decision (27-30, 30-27, 29-28)

John Dodson Vs. John Moraga
John Dodson has a fantastic combination of speed and power in his fists and he used both to perfection in his stoppage of John Moraga. As the second round was ending, Dodson unleashed a knee and then flurry of punches to Moraga’s face. It opened up a cut big enough that the doctor wouldn’t allow the fight to continue. Then the “Magician” grabs the mic and let UFC 174 headliners Demetrious Johnson and Ali Bagautinov know he’s coming.
John Dodson def. John Moraga via doctor’s stoppage at 5:00 of Round 2

Rafael dos Anjos Vs. Jason High
Referee Kevin Mulhall had his hands full in this fight. First Rafael dos Anjos hit Jason High with a pretty ugly and hard to call accidental eye poke that stopped the fight temporarily. Soon after the action resumed dos Anjos dropped High with a left hook, he then his High with a barrage of hammer fists, many to the back of the head. Mulhall called the fight when High couldn’t save himself. High, enraged by both the eye poke and the punches to the back of the head shoved the referee as he was getting it. It remains to be see what the fallout will be from the shove or hits to the back of the head.
Rafael dos Anjos def. Jason High via TKO at 3:36 of Round 2

Piotr Hallmann Vs. Yves Edwards
Yves Edwards fought valiantly but it wasn’t enough as Piotr Hallmann eventually wore him down and secured a rear-naked choke submission.
