Exclusively on UFC Fight Pass, the UFC presents the first of two cards this Saturday live from Auckland New Zealand, Fight Night 43 features a main event of James Te Huna taking on Nate Marquart. Te Huna isn’t the only local star on the bill, a little further down the card fellow Kiwi and Ultimate Fighter Smashes winner Robert Whittaker takes on Mike Rhodes in a welterweight bout.
The UFC Odds makers like Mike Whittaker in this fight as they have him as a -305 favorite so betters will need to risk $305 for every $100 to win on the Smashes winner. A bet on Mike Rhodes will earn betters $235 for every $100 they risk if he should pull of an upset.
UFC Fight Night Odds
Mike Rhodes +235
Robert Whittaker -305
Whittaker is coming into this fight coming off two straight losses, first a split decision to another former TUF alum Court McGee and then a first round TKO loss to Stephen Thompson. Whittaker is a finisher, of his 11 wins, only 1 went to the judges cards.
His opponent, Mike Rhodes is 6-2 and has a decision loss in his only UFC appearance. News come out today that Rhodes has undergone a 35lbs weight cut before his UFC debut, he took the fight on short notice and had to lose the weight in 11 days. That’s likely part of the reason for his loss to George Sullivan. If you look at the Sullivan fight and the other loss on his record, both were fights taken on short notice and needed a drastic weight cut.
With ample time to prepare, Rhodes should be at his best when he steps into the cage against Whittaker. Whittaker will need to finish Rhodes if he wants to get back in the win column. Rhodes has an excellent mix of speed and nice combinations that could give Whitaker trouble in this fight.
The odds heavily favor Whitaker here and the cache that comes with being an Ultimate Fighter winner would boost those odds. Whittaker should win this fight but I don’t expect it to be a blow out as the UFC odds would indicate.
