The UFC’s first event in New Zealand is in the books. It was the first of two events the promotion held Saturday night. The card was a little lackluster but considering it was a free event (with fight pass subscription) it was enjoyable and of course, it was more fights to bet on.
Nate Marquardt defeats James Te Huna
Marquardt come into this fight on a three fight losing streak while fighting in the welterweight division but he figured his best chance to get a win was a move up to his more natural middleweight division. The move paid off as he looked impressive coming out strong, kneeing Te Huna, taking him down and peppering him with elbows. He was able to secure a submission victory before the first round was over.

Jared Rosholt defeats Soa Palelei
Jared Rosholt was able to subdue the “Hulk” in earning a unanimous decision over Soa Palelei. He used a series of clinches, takedowns and effective striking from the top position to negate Palelei’s power one punch KO power.

Charles Oliveira defeats Hatsu Hioki
Charles Oliveira showed once again why he’s the best young jiu-jitsu specialist in the UFC. He earned a second round submission using a modified d’arce choke, Peruvian necktie maneuver. It was the first time Hatsu Hioki was tapped in his professional career spanning 37 fights.

Robert Whittaker defeats Mike Rhodes
The young Ultimate Fighter Smashes winner ended his two-fight losing streak with a unanimous victory over Mike Rhodes. Whittaker was sharp and always a couple steps ahead of Rhodes. He kept it standing and dominated the striking game for the first two round and then took down Rhodes where he worked the ground and pound for an easy victory.

UFC Fight Night 43 Bonuses
Nate Marquart and Charles Oliveira both won performance of the night bonus for their submission victories. Gian Villante and Sean O’Connell took home performance bonuses for their split decision battle to open the event. All fighters will pocket an extra $50,000
