Tie Quan Zhang is already a legend in his home country. As the first-ever Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt from China, Zhang’s MMA success bodes well for the sport in the Middle Kingdom.

Before his recent two-fight losing streak, Zhang started out undefeated and reeled off fourteen straight wins. Eleven of his first fourteen wins came by way of submission, proving his mettle as a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.

Zhang has been training in the United States to gain more experience and learn different techniques to add to his solid MMA background. Only two years ago the UFC established an office in the capital of China, Beijing. Coincidently World Extreme Cagefighting, where Zhang then fought, merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship the same year. WEC fighters were taken in by the UFC and Zhang was one of them.

Zhang won in his UFC debut, but lost his next two bouts.

Zhang is just the first of many Asian fighters to come. His foray into the UFC will open a lot of opportunities for his fellow Chinese fighters. His successful MMA career is a blueprint for aspiring young fighters from the East who want to make their mark in the fast growing sport of MMA.
